I quite liked the film version of Dune, but the narration technique of hearing the character's thoughts was a bit awkward. It's a case of a narration style working well in one medium and not another.
It's clear from your comments that you didn't like the film. I thought the art direction is epic; the future isn't all shiny and smooth (Star Trek Next Generation -style) but gothic, ornate, and romantic. This is an area of the storytelling that film has an advantage over print - it can realize artistic visions. The technology and monsters are well implemented in the special effects (those shields are dope, and the worms pretty cool). The last aspect of the film that impressed me were the characters. The Baron is vile, Sting makes a sleek Feyd-Rautha, and Patrick Stuart brought tears to my eyes as the patriarchal Gurney Halleck.
