Go to school for film?

I just wanted a little advice (more like an opinion) from Kevin or anyone else there at view askew, on the importance of actually studying film and directing in school. For someone interested in directing and filmmaking, how important is it for that person to have "majored" in film or even gone on to graduate school for it?
