I would say that there are things to be learned in school that relate directly to the business of film making, such as terminology, equipment requirements, and general contacts within the biz, but they can't teach style, vision, concepts, etc.. You either have those or you don't, you can't be taught that, IMHO.

My advise to you in becomming a film maker, is to just make films.. Stop what you're doing right now and make a film.

I make films all the time.. Nobody sees them except my family and sometimes, if she's lucky, I'll show my dog, but for the most part it's for my own enjoyment.. Write, write often, keep writing, and when you're done writing, write some more..
