I can picture him sitting on the dock of the bay with a fishing rod and telling stories to the fishermen around him whilst he enjoys a beer or three. (He can drink because he's the Son of God. I bet Rufus can, too, seeing as he still had the family jewels intact.)
Which would explain why he wouldn't know what was going on, but not why he couldn't be recalled by the powers that be to remedy the situation.
