Even if they intended on being killed, which is essentially suicide, their intentions wouldn't mean shit once they exited that church. As it's explained in the movie, their souls would be morally clean. While their intention would be atoned for, the cops wouldn't know and they would still lay waste to Barry and Larry.

: the plan being this: 1) kill people outside of the church, thus making themselves targets of the police. 2) transubstantiate. 3) walk through the arches to be absolved of their recently committed sins. 4) get killed by the police, and go home.
