They didn't want clean memories. they wanted to be with god. when the free will thing was said, they didn't know about the end of existence that they would cause, and all they were doing was trying to see daddy again. I think it's a fair assumption to make that if they had gotten back into heaven (the whole universe-ending thing notwithstanding), God would have forgiven them because they had changed and were truly sorry for their transgressions. I mean, when you miss someone that much.... That is, perhaps, the gift, not the curse of the Dogma angels. they can miss God, therefore they must've known Him. Imagine never doubting. Never wondering. Almost heaven itself. Damn spoiled Bartelby and Loki.
