In Dogma, the devil is portrayed as an evil demon who is rebelious from god. We see this in that when Loki finally uncovers the true evil in Bartlby's plan, he immedietly compares Bartlby to Lucifer, saying that Bartlby is almost waging war against god, and that he wants no part of it.
Now, dont get me wrong, Im not a satanic worshiper, but cut the guy some slack. I've never understood why 9 out of 10 times Satan is portrayed as some sort of Evil Sadistic Hate-Monger. If you think about it, the guy's really done nothing wrong, he is simply punishing those who deserve it. In what way does that make Lucifer Evil? If he were punishing innocent people, that would be one thing, but since I am in total agreement that god has ultimate patience and forgiveness, you would probably have to do something unmentionable in order to be banished to hell. As I see it, the devil's just doing his job, its not like hes doing it for kicks.
Also, Id think that God and Satan would have created the after-life in some sort of coopertive effort. Obviously not all humans were going to be worthy of heaven, god must have known that, so wouldnt he or she or it establish some sort of alternative resting place for punishment? Thats what I think hell is, not a rebelion from god, but more just an alternative after-life where the truly evil are punished.
If punishing the evil is wrong, well, what should be done with them? and why is the punisher considered the incarnation of evil? In todays society Id think hed be considered almost heroic.
Kev, don't tell me that with all of your amazing interpretations of religion that you have NEVER thought of this before. (??)
