Distribution, baby. If you have a star there can be a marketing push because the studio will think that people will go to see the star, not necessarily the movie. All you have to look at is Dogma. Without Affleck/Damon/Rock/etc. you wouldn't have seen the marketing push for such a "small" film. As well, it was mentioned in the summaries (i think) that Drawing Flies probably wouldn't get out on VHS or DVD unless Jason Lee becomes a huge star. This points to the fact that its not the movie (at least at the beginning) but what the studio thinks. And what they think almost inevitiably comes from the marketability of the stars of the film, allowing for exceptions of course.
