Simply because they still would have had to live out their mortal lives. Think about it, they couldn't have committed suicide, as it explains in the movie. They couldn't kill each other, because that is murder. They couldn't get someone else to kill them. Their souls had to be free of sin, and the only way was to kill all those people, be redeemed, and then be killed.

Of course, had they been patient, they simply could have chopped off their wings, asked God for forgiveness (and she would have forgiven them, as the movie showed) and lived out normal, Godly lives. But, being rebellious as they were, they figured they had lived on Earth long enough, and wanted to go back home immediately.
