: Know what a good way to discern the average age of most users on the board these days is? It's those "Which ViewAskew Flick Is The Best?"-poll questions.
: The lower you see "Chasing Amy," the younger the user (this can be contrasted with how high "Mallrats" or "clerks." appears on these lists).
Okay, I understand the idea of Mallrats being a good gauge for intelligence level. I also understand the idea with Chasing Amy. But Clerks, I do not understand.
To me, despite what you would say about me, Clerks would be top on my list. For several reasons...
It introduced me to View Askew, Kevin, and exposed me to indie films more than I had been before. I also thought that the dialog in Clerks was better written than both Mallrats and Chasing Amy, although Chasing Amy was definitely higher caliber than Mallrats.
Also, it made me realize just how much the MPAA and other associations dictate to me what I am allowed to view or not view. Of course, Clerks never came to any theaters within 50 miles of me, literally. And when it came out on video, only one video store in my area picked it up, and it was a restricted viewing film... that was not a good situation. I managed to see it anyway, and was happy to have done so.
And suddenly it clicked for me... why would a movie like Clerks be under the same classification as the "Debbie Does Dallas", "Nina does NYC", "Lorraine does L.A.", etc movies...? The hardest of the hardcore porn was considered on a par with Clerks? I was offended, to say the least.
Now I've gone off on a bit of a tirade/rant.
The point is that, it seems to me that the only reason you say these things about films is that because personally you believe Chasing Amy was best, and Clerks and Mallrats were juvenile. Where Dogma fits in your list, I have no idea. But it seems that as long as someone has a sound reason for their choices, that it does not matter which film was their personal favorite.
At some times, I'm inclined to say Mallrats is my favorite, just because after a time of seeing "throught-provoking" or "intellectually-stimulating" movies, it's nice to sit down for a movie of dick and fart jokes.
Does that make me juvenile?
