It was about proving God wrong. God should be infallible, and to prove her/him/it/whatever wrong would unmake existence. Their souls would have been clensed if they had went under the arch and when they died, they would have technically been forgiven (I think, anyway.. It's been many a' years since I went to a Catholic school, and I never paid attention anyway)but they STILL would have proven God wrong.

I think they would've gone to hell. My friend sort of agrees with you though. :P
