How did Kevin Smith come up with the characters of Silent Bob and Jay?

First off, i would like to say the kevin smith is a genious. i don't know anyone who can come up with stuff that funny. i hope to meet him some day. but anyways, i hope he reads this that way he could tell me.. HOw did he come up with characters of Silent Bob and Jay?
