I didn't become a huge Kevin Smith fan until around the time Chasing Amy hit video, and the order I saw his movies in was Mallrats, Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma. The funny thing is, I can remember each thing that crossed my mind as I saw the trailers for each film. Maybe your original views were similar to mine:

CLERKS - Black and white film about two supermarket clerks philosophising for an hour and a half. Probably a Seinfeld like "What's the Deal..." thing.

MALLRATS - Looks funny, GREAT looking soundtrack. The main star is Shannon Doherty, I have no clue who anyone else is.

CHASING AMY - The guy spends the whole movie trying to convert Amy the lesbian (played by that girl I recognize from "Married...With Children").

Then of course by the time DOGMA came out, I finally had a clue. I'm glad to say that I was wrong about each of these movies. ALso this: originally, I didn't like Chasing amy much except for the first 20 minutes. However, each time I watch it over the years, I come to appreciate it more and more. Still hasn't replaced Clerks as my fav though. Just thought it would be funny to ask everyone to "look back" :-)
