Film production questions for anyone qualified

First off:
What format did Brian and Vincent shoot their first flicks in? 16mm or 35mm? Dv derivitive?

Secondly:
How much did those first productions cost?

Why am I asking this? I think I'm about ready to launch my little foo-foo production banner and put out a flick. I don't have as connected a friend as Kevin Smith, but I've got the drive, blah blah cliche blah. How important is it to have a connected connection?

The only reason I want to do one is so I can update my NLE editing junk and do what I used to love doing . . . uh, no, not make out with girls--even though that's a good guess. I mean making fun flicks with friends, of course!
