One thing I think you have to consider with Amy is that Kev made the flick as an interpretation of some kind of a relationship that really happened. That being the case, characters like Hooper might seem a little unnecessary, less three-dimensional than the rest...

...but at the same time there's the idea that a lot of the characters in "Amy" weren't actually INVOLVED in the relationship Kev was adapting. He's said that Banky was the personification of all the rage he felt toward his high school buddies who got a girlfriend and stopped being friends. It's possible that Hooper is less a person than a concept, someone who understood the situation better than Holden/Kevin and whose advice was appreciated and should have been listened to.

Then again, I might be just talking out my ass (or sticking my hand in it).
