This is just my point of view on it, but I'd say do both. Find yourself an agent, but go to college. You don't want to just sit around and wait to get calls for auditions, hoping to get your big break. And if, by chance, acting doesn't work out for you, you'll need something to fall back on.
I went through something similar after I graduated high school. I didn't want to go to college, and just wanted to try and get work in comic books as a penciler or inker. My parents weren't happy with the idea, and after a lot of arguing, I gave in and accepted going to college. Overall, college turned out to be the better choice. I found out eventually that I didn't have the patience for comic art (at least the patience to turn it out at a regular pace), and have decided against trying to break into the art scene.
It's tough going trying to get into pretty much any aspect of the entertainment industry. Your best bet would probably be to compromise with your parents. Take classes part time for a while, and leave your schedule a little open in case an agent can get you set up with some auditions. See how things go, and after a year or two, then decide what your plan should be.
