Yes, you should ask for your money back. If you are seeing shit like that on the top or bottom, the projectionist most likely framed the image wrong. On "flat" (1.85:1) prints, as we in the know call them and Almost Famous is, not all of the frame is used, and there is extra image on both the top and bottom. If the projectionist has skills, and if he threads it properly, when the movie starts, it will start perfectly in frame, you will see what you are supposed to see. I work with some true idiots, who can't thread worth a damn, then when they start the movie, it will start out of frame. Now, they should fix it, but some projectionists don't show the movies the love they deserve, do not realize it is out of frame and do not fix it. That is when you should complain. It's just like on the Chasing Amy DVD, in the train station, Holden and Banky's heads are damn near the top, and get cut off.
And a word of warning to any would-be projectionists: DON'T DO IT!!! You will never enjot another movie again. You start noticing every single little imperfection in the presentation. Reel changes, scratches, digital sound drop-outs, misframing, ghosting, screwed up eccentrics, and 5,000 other things.
Hope that helped.
Scott.
