not quite sure what you mean by "written as" but it was filmed in Minnesota because it was cheaper. The mall that they shot it in is very close to the Mall of America so the mall was pretty much dead. Most of the people walking around in the background of Mallrats are actually shoppers. Since the filming of the movie, I believe the mall has been torn down. Or perhaps that was the dirt mall, I'm not sure which one.
