Actually, WHO you know is important...but most people dont KNOW anyone. Here is what worked for me.
Actually, let me fill you in...my movie got picked up by a indie record label that wanted to venture out into making skate/music videos and indie films. Since being picked up, it really hasnt been distributed, or really shown out much. except at local colleges and small town movie cons and such. but hey, its out there :-)
Okay, check around your local area (and not so local, if the opportunity provides itself). I had a wild hair up my ass and started to talking to local Play production companies. that helped tons...like helped with acting, lighting, makeup, props, EVERYTHING. They were able to provide me with names of people who know how to get plays produced and distributed. granted, plays are slightly different, it was better than no information at all.
Then i spoke with people at my local news stations and people who produced and made local commercials (as bad as they are) and out of all of those people....SOMEONE is going to be able to drop some names to you. I got a slew of names, and although no one was willing to pick up my flick, they gave me countless information, and more names. eventually, i wound up in the office of the indie record label...and the rest is history, or history in the making....
you can also upload it to a site such as ifilms.com or atom films. i havent gone that route before...but if the movie is good, that is a really good way to get it noticed.
long story short...work your ass off, find out as much information as you can...the WEB is a great place to find info. but really work your ass off..it isnt easy. if it were easy, EVERYONE would make films. but if this is something you really really want to do, devoting all this time and effort and working your ass, it will all be worth it. even if only 25 people see your flick initially, its better than nothing...trust me. if your movie is good, seeing the reaction that total strangers have to your movie is great
hope this helps...and keep with it!!
