They don't speak telepathically, they speak in code- there IS a sound emmited when they 'speak' that first time, maybe the theater you saw it in just had crappy sound or acoustics.
Not to mention that they have video screens that light up on their "faces"- not exactly biological.
: Maybe if he weren't anti-test screenings, he would've found out the flaw of interpretation at the end of the film and been able to fix it. My vote would be for a big, computer animated arrow that says "robots!" pointing at them. Or a change in dialogue. Whatever.
In retrospect, maybe they should have added a line or two to the narration at this point "explaining" that they were Mecha of the future. But if that was done, I bet you a thousand dollars that the discussion would now be, "Why did Spielberg feel the need to spell it all out? It was OBVIOUS that they were robots, why make a blatant statement on the narration about it?"
