: To me, it seems as though the reason he goes nuts on the "other " David is due to finding that he is indeed NOT a beautiful and unique snowflake. Taking this the next logical step: when there was evidence of a compitition between Martin and David ( I.E. the Spinach)why would he NOT then react the same to Martin?
Because Martin was just another human being. There's lots of those. There's lots of mechas. There's only one David. Plus, at the beginning, David doesn't have all the pent-up rage yet...
AND he wouldn't hurt Monica by hurting Martin. It's that simple.
: I really will not go into the unbelieveable idea that by eating, an android will damage himself. Why then is it possible for him to be underwater and speak??
But... you went into it.
You said you wouldn't.
YOU SAID YOU WOULDN'T, DAMN YOU.
It's like... you fucking violated me.
I loved you... I trusted you... your Dark Horse comic-based screen name drew me in like, like, some random seven word combination programming me to forever love. Violated.
Or... he's waterproofed but not proofed against a half pound of real fucking gummy shit like garlic spinach. I can move my fingers easily in water, not so in a vat of dense boiled greens.
: As I said earlier: Jude Law was not needed. Taking the PHANTOM EDIT way of looking at things. Imagine the movie without him. DAVID alone in the woods. He gets from point A to point B much the same way then.
With no challenge to his innocent vision of love and the world? Jeez. A kwepie doll wanders the forest with only a teddy bear to talk to for a half hour. Brillant plotting, man.
COMPARE AND CONTRAST. It's like a tenth grade social studies essay.
: Sorry but I cannot believe that the FLESH FAIR would be conducted in such a manner.
You've not been to many metal concerts, have you? Never seen a bunch of grunting drunken hunters? An ECW show? Put down the Asimov and get out more.
: And given Brenden Gleeson's speech about "Artificiality" and how the newest affront to God is the replication of a human boy............well I feel DAVID begging for his life would indeed incite the ( already rabid by all accounts) crowd to further violence.
Humans instinctively want to protect a little kid in trouble... it's part of why we continue as a race. Except in cases like the Holocaust where protecting a child would get you killed yourself, it's hard for a person to not want to protect a child... or something that looked too much like a child to not have some doubt.
: The RULES OF ROBOTICS say that first 'Do no harm to Humans" Why drag Martin into the pool? Why does he not understand the need to breath? the second rule is " Do no harm to thy self". Why the eating episode?
The spinach, he flat-out didn't know. He wasn't made to think like a robot... he was programmed to think like a little boy and...
He was instinctively protecting himself, the way he thought it should be, by hiding behind his big brother because that's what any little kid would do because...
Again...
"Asimov's Rules" are neither laws nor commandments. He did not invent the robot, will not punish those who violate his fictious rules in other unrelated works of fiction, nor does he leave you presents at Christmas.
