It's funny that you acknowledge Zero Hour in your post yet you still mention that you feel a character like Superman is steeped in 60+ years of backstory... that's kinda what Crisis and Zero Hour got rid of. So technically new readers only really have 6 years worth of backstory to wory about - anything published 1995 upwards.
As for Kevin mishandling characters I'm sure that DC monitor his writing and ensure that Kevin stays within the parameters of each character - and he is a professional after all. Granted he has Bats spouting out some one-liners but when you have so many different writers regurlarly handling the character there really is no current definitive version.
