So technically new readers only really have 6 years worth of backstory to wory about - anything published 1995 upwards.
Actually, I think both were supposed to be seperate points, but I can see how they come together: A character like Superman is bogged down by nearly a century of history, effectively limiting what kind of interesting things you can do with the character today....Zero Hour and Crisis I blame more on the revamps that started with like Silver Age Flash, Green Lantern, yadda-yadda-yadda....though, yes, it "cleaned" up Supes, I think those big cleaning house maxi-series always cause more trouble than they actually fix....
