My biggest complaint was that all the humans on the planet could talk...I don't know, in the original, the fact that Heston was the only intelligent (Shudder!) human on the planet really lent to his sense of urgency and hopelesness...and man, Roth sure hammed it up. His gritted-teeth growlings were cool for the most part, but he talks like that even when he goes to dinner? Boy, a guy THAT mad must have 'roids the size of silver dollars...
