- I only wish Anchor Bay had released it with the Italian-language soundtrack with English subtitles as well as the English language soundtrack because the dubbing of the kids distracts me. It's a very disturbing, powerful film but the dubbing of the kids cheapens it somewhat.
THE CAT O' NINE TAILS is probably the least of Argento's "animal" trilogy but it has several great sequences and a terrific performance by Karl Malden as the blind protagonist.
INFERNO is my all-time favorite Argento film. All non-linear nightmare logic and style, this film is like taking a walking tour of a baroque and strangely beautiful Hell. It's at once a quieter film than SUSPIRIA and at the same time more relentless as it dispenses with any real surface "plot" at all and just lets all Hell break loose. A simply brilliant example of pure cinema.
PHENOMENA is good but overlong, again has many great moments and of course National Treasure Jennifer Connelly. It's amazing how little she's aged in the past 17 years.
DEEP RED is of course considered to be Argento's "masterpiece" by most, although I prefer TENEBRAE and INFERNO. It is a great film, but is too long in it's 126-minute Italian version (released with a composite English/Italian soundtrack by Anchor Bay). while the longest English-language only version (105-minutes, released on Japanese laserdisc way-back-when under the hilarious title SUSPIRIA PART 2) omits what I consider at least to be some important plot footage.
