Saying people shouldn't spend more than usual in the post-thanksgiving days is like saying people shouldn't buy more fireworks than usual in the weeks before July 4th, or drink more beer than usual during the super bowl, or smoke more weed than usual at 4:20 in the afternoon, or... You get the point.
It's part of tradition. Sure, some traditions are dumb, but let them be.
Think of it this way. The holiday season is a surge in sales because people are buying Christmas gifts & etc. If they didn't buy as many gifts during the holiday season, they wouldn't really have any reason to buy gifts throughout the rest of the year (with the exception of birthday parties and other holidays), thus your idea for "more frugal spending" certainly would be hurting the economy.
