Clark,
I have no relative experience to even beigin believing that I could relate to what you just wrote. I've known people that have abused, and the number one thing they all told me was that they had to change their environment. I went out with a girl once who was in AA and NA and she tried to help me understand what it was that even if you no longer use you are still an alcoholic, or still an addict, just one that's in recovery. The other thing that I have Gleaned from knowing these friends and family is that without a support team, a few people to lean on in a time of need, recovery can be impossible even if you want it. I've had my own struggles in the past with things other than drugs. This is my own personal belief, not meant to be advice, sometimes just waking up and not knowing what today will be like is reason enough to do it.
There was a quote by Herodotus I used to use as a signature in my emails.
"Man is indeed a creature of chance. Call no man happy until he is dead 'Til then he is merely fortunate."
Peace.
