Kubrick himself realized that it was unfeasible to release it as NC-17. Kubrick signed the contract that guaranteed a R-rated cut, and Kubrick understood that in America, an NC-17 movie won't play in many theaters and won't be able to advertise.

It's really really good. People in the audience laughed at the box. I don't think they understood how serious it actually is.
