......it makes perfectr sense. I took it more along the lines of Donner's life sucked so bad and always felt that was meant for more, but never got there. Then, he put so much stock in a follish quest that he would rather delude himself into thinking it was possible, even when all signs pointed to otherwise, than return to the hell that was his life.
That is, until the ending. Of course, the way it is it's a postive ending. My way it's negative. Funny how the cutting of one simple scene can completely change the context of a film. See also the cut ending from Clerks.....
