I think costumegirl has it right. There's a lot of deep thought in that movie. It's not just the dichotomy between religion & spirituality.
I think Dogma is very much about God's relationship with humanity, and one of the recurring themes in the film is the unsinkable love that God has for people.
All the characters are fallable - swearing, drugs, sex, sin... and it's not as if God doesn't care - you see in the church scene where Alanis is looking out at the carnage how saddened She is by what depths Her creatures sink to. Watching Bartelby descend into a violent frenzy caused by his loneliness and separation from God is an important part of the theology. God's forgiveness and ability to restore the mess we make when we are in that state is another.
Just the opinion of a would-be church-goer.
