I will amend his second statement by saying that if you do feel the need to imitate, try imitating style rather than characters.
Crisp Dialogue and funny scripts will never be a bad thing to see, even if it is a bit Kevin Smith sounding. If you're going to imitate anyone's style I would rather it be Kevin Smith than whichever hack wrote this years 3 hour cash in shill war movie/teen sex movie.
