Fucking Gap commercials. This corporation does more environmental damage, employs more underwaged Third World minors, and screws more of the youth of America out of their hard earned pocket money, for what? A badly sewn white t-shirt and beige capri stretch pants? Could we be more conformist if we all walked around in Maoist unisex overalls?
Yet they've got the cash to make these fabulously hip commercials, to lull us into submission. First Supertramp was DEBASED -- and my onetime idols Alanis, Liz Phair, Sheryl Crow, etc. destroy their own dignity by bopping around in ribbed turtleneck sweaters. Now the Coen brothers, Hopper, Brian Wilson? How can they sleep?
They're suckering some of these celebrities into supporting them by offering to donate money to the charity of their choice, granted. But Gap is an EVIL EMPIRE. It's like the wicked Joaquin Phoenix emperor in Gladiator when he's like "they will love me and do anything I say...because I will entertain them!"
: : because i usually loathe Gap commercials i was flabbergasted to see the one with Dennis Hopper playing chess with a Beach Boys instrumental from "Pet Sounds" no less for the music. screen icon (or screen psycho) + obscure music = strangely satisfying commerical. i'm still not shopping in their store but i'll give em credit where credit is due.

: 2) "Pet Sounds" isn't that obscure an album; almost every person I know in school owns it, and everybody knows it.
: There are at least two other Gap commercials, one directed by Roman Coppola with 'Dude' from 'Dude, Where's My Car?" (or was he 'my'?) and Scarlett Johansen, and there's one by Cameron Crowe which is really good and has just a crowd (nobody I recognized) and, I believe, a Who song, and is a good commercial too. I believe there's one more, but I don't know for sure.
