I think it's more a matter of well trained film and stage actors being put in an atmosphere where they don't know what they're acting against, what it's going to look like, and they're shooting everything in bits and pieces -- if you're used to subtle, realistic, modern movies, and you're going for that acting style, it's going to be all wrong. Star Wars is a soap opera in space. We need graaaahhhhhnd emotion!
And that wouldn't explain Portman -- she's not a Jedi OR a padawan.
But I can admit that Lucas's Methadone directing could have something to do with it.
