:what are your views on Absurd Comedy and its affect on your work, on modern comedy and on Jay and Silent Bob in particular?
: Good comedy never changes it only evolves with the times! Good on you!
I know were digging way too deep, venus, but the first time I watched the "proposition" scene toward the end of Chasing Amy I thought it was eerily reminiscent of any number of scenes in Sartre's 'Huis Clos' (No Exit), and in many respects the scene follows in the absurd theatrical tradition. I started combing through the movies, extracting far-reaching parallels to Sartre and Ionesco. But then I stopped myself and said "there's no way Kevin had all this going through his mind when he wrote the scene." Good writing is good writing, independent of a a specific style or philosophy. Like Satre, Ionesco and Ives, Kevin has the gift of crafting naturally funny dialogue in larger-than-life situations - but having listened to the man I wouldn't group him into a rigid stylistic category like Absurdism; he does his own thing and the result is brilliant. Now if only it weren't J-Lo delivering it..... :-) just kidding.
