It's imaginary. In that last shot that you see Donner he has a clean white shirt, almost no stubble and he is clean. Now, after being in the woods for (another issue that was never cleared up--the time) 3 months or so, even if you wash the shirt it will be dirty, your hair will be much longer and you're not going to be able to shave with two rocks.

Sure I'm being very realistic about the movie, but that's my main evidence as to why it's all Donner's imagination.
