I chalk that up to directors trying to make the MESSAGE of the movie stronger, rather than being sticklers for realism and continuity.
You know... independent filmmaking.
But that does make perfect sense. It's much better logic for the 'figment of his imagination' argument than simply, "It's all in his head because Bigfoot isn't real!"
I tend to think that whether or not the Bigfeets (or whatever plural that would be) are real is secondary to the fact that Donner got the blissful, meaningful friendships he was looking for from the very start. He was looking to 'move on to something bigger' and he did, even if he went mad in order to create them all in his mind.
