Hi:
1) Figure out something you're going to do other than direct; because unless the chances of directing a film are about as great as sprouting another penis overnight.
2) You can do it. Despite what I said, odds are meant to be lived up to. So, I got some advice that I'll pass along to you. Free. I had to pay tuition for it...
Get a book called "The Hollywood Directory," or something like that...basically it lists all of the studios in H-Town and their addresses. Now, sit down and spend about a MONTH, I'm serious (!) writing a letter to each of these studios and sell yourself. One good way to break in is as a script supervisor. Just ask for a job reading scripts and getting out on set - you'll meet people really quickly. Thing is, if you spend a month writing the letter, it'll be really good and you'd be surprised how far a well written letter can get you.
If you impress JUST ONE person, it could be enough. The guy that told me this is an accomplished screenwriter & Producer, and he sent over 200 of his letters when he did this. A few got back to him. The others regret it.
Also, once you get there, start researching the DGA and find out how you get in. Hopefully you've met some people by now and they'll vouch for you.
Take what I've said as you will...I just hope it helps.
Good Luck!
The Captain
