the two artistic echoes that come to mind are: Dona Flor and her Two
Husbands, and that lyric by Joni Mitchell that goes: "He's the well-kept
secret of the underground....he's in debt to the Company
Store...because his only channeled aspiration....is getting back that
girl he had before."
What makes her think that she'll be able to keep to monogamy after
she gets the license? Maybe she is on some level trying to decide
between them. Maybe she is using ex- as back-burner guy to
undermine mainman and be insurance in case that falls through
(which it probably will since even if he never knows, she will always
know, and like the joke (when the widower and the widow are in bed
there are four in the bed) there are three in the bed now...at least
three, depending on whether ex-man is schtupping anyone else
currently.
Or it could be she doesn't want to marry at all, and is playing them
against eachother to make the kind of drama that will eventually
detonate, leaving her alone, eventually remorseful (one hopes) and
ready to have a relationship with the new lover: grief. There's an old
song: "Stop - in the name of love". Now the whole board knows even
if her mainman doesn't. Although on some level he must know. What
are you going to tell her, Ember?
