He said on the "Swingers" commentary that they were looking at "Clerks" as inspiration for making a good, but cheap "Swingers". Rather than make a bad studio type film, they wanted to go for a slightly slicker looking "Clerks" type film, more about dialogue than scenery.
I didn't see "Dinner For Five" since I don't have IFC, but I believe I've heard Jon express his admiration for Kevin on a few occasions.
