I think if it was just about the money, he'd release them up against each other and let the idiot-completist collectors buy both. I honestly think the guy's so insulated with yesmen producers and dorky effects guys that he really just has no clue of his public perception... and he's lost touch with his own films. I think the guy really is deluded enough to believe that the new edits of the first three are "better" and "more complete".
I'd compare him to another loony insulated genius-who-lost-it-in-seclusion but, according to 20/20, even Michael Jackson doesn't dig "Clones".
