- Kubrick did complete an edit of EYES WIDE SHUT that was screened (under heavy security) in New York City for Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman, and two of the top executives from Warner Bros. mere days before he died. When he died, this cut of the film was essentially "locked" and completed by his editor and post-production staff. There's little doubt that had he lived, Kubrick would have tinkered until the last possible minute (like he always did, and as you pointed out, he sometimes even made changes AFTER the initial release, as he did with both 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and THE SHINING), so in essense the release print of EYES WIDE SHUT could be seen as a "work in progress". Who knows how much would have changed, but I think the film would have been more streamlined had Kubrick lived to continue editing for those final four months.

: Kubrick died and the studio said "Yeah, he finished it"...
: Kubrick didn't "finish" The Shining til after it had opened in theatres then re-cut it...
: I think we can all safely say EWS wasn't "finished"...
