Someone mentioned that he reminds them of some guy from their neighborhood (Benny from the block?). I think that sums up my initial reaction to him. But he can act. He is funny. A little over eager to please would be my worst criticism. Some may poo on his "DD" performance. But I think he nailed every defining feature of MM AND DD that I ever saw in the funny books. In "Clerks", he SO got the "comic writer with high aspirations but not quite the talent to match" thing perfect. He played the bad guy stuff ("Dazed & Confused" and the like) perfect. Romantic lead... "Bounce" was a silly movie, but sweet enough and he played that as approachable as any top-billed Hollywood lead (better than some, Dick Gere!) With what little crap he was given in "Pearl Harbor" and that asteroid movie, he did fine. I saw "Phantoms" (for the record, a bad flick) on late nite programming last year in Brazil, and maybe it because I felt a little homesick (even though I would move to a Brazil in a heartbeat), he was indeed the "Bomb", if there was any. I may not be a HUGE fan. But the guy can cover all the bases. And the recent attack on his "People are just upset with the Lopez relationship because of the race factor), is missing Ben's point. I like the match-up ex's game. I.E., imagine Paltrow with P-Diddy. That says it all. My wife is from Rio (oh, glorious Rio, most beautiful city on the planet) and I totally see the whole different culture thing. If two people make a connection, especially over race, that holds a lot of power. I hope they make it. But I won't judge if they don't. Sorry for the length of the post, but these subject has been sticking in my craw and this seemed like a good place to plunk these thoughts down. Thanks for reading!
