Ah, but he hasn't tess-screened one of his own since 'Hook' (I believe that's inclusive, but it may be that he said "Man, if the test audiences will like 'Hook', they'll like anything, so I don't needs 'em!").
For my money, test screenings can be great helps for directors, but they need to have final cut in case the studio heads get worried about the reaction to some specific thing. And, also, reviews leak onto the Internet which can be bad, but is generally over-considered.
