This is in response to the comments made by Dead Hero in regards to the Atkins diet. The Atkins diet was created to be used by brittle diabetics who are otherwise unable to control their blood sugar. For normal people, The excessive protein diet can lead to a number of adverse events, the most important of which is kidney failure, and can be very life threatening. I am a pharmacy student who, being on the heavyset side myself, has done alot of research into nutritional issues and weight loss. I work with a pharmacist who is national acknowledged for his work in nutrition. He recommended that a low carb diet is useful, if it is done right. Rather than lowering all carbs, it is essential to lessen complex carbs like pastas, starches, etc. The simple sugars in fruits and most vegetables are very healthy and don't result in weight gain. For example, celery actually takes more calories to digest than it provides, becoming a negative calorie food. Also, vegeatables contain micronutrients like flavanoids which current research is indicating to be as important to the diet as vitamins.
