I had made the decision to move in with my (now quite FERVENTLY EX) boyfriend. We were looking at places (read as: I was looking at places, and telling him about them), then he decides we need another roommate. He puts forward a female friend of his, who was working as a waitress, but who insisted she was about to get promoted to management. I wasn't thrilled, but I was in love with my boyfriend, so I agreed. We got a little ranch house in Edison, NJ (to this day, I refer to it as the Welfare Ranch) which entailed a security deposit of $1,500 each. This girl didn't have it yet, but kept exclaiming that she was about to be promoted, and would have the money almost immediately. So, since I'd been doing fairly well at this point, I paid both mine and hers. She proceeded to get not promoted, but fired. I was the only one in the house with a car or a license, so I was the only one buying groceries. I was also the only person in the house who didn't have at least one child, all of whom spent fair quantities of time with us, which meant serious groceries. I refused point-blank to pay more than my share of the bills, so gradually, the cable and phone were shut off. Power would have been soon to follow, I'm sure, but I got out of there before that. Not, as one might assume, because I couldn't take the monetary situation - I came home to find the two of them all sorts of snuggly on the couch. I knew he'd never been faithful, but I'd made him swear never to do it in the house I was paying 2 peoples' share of, and NEVER with her. So, I went home to the parentals. Never saw so much as a dime of my money. They got a 3rd to take my place, but they were evicted shortly thereafter. This might have had something to do with the fact that my boyfriend got fired from his job the day after I moved out; he'd been skipping work to stay home and fuck her.
The landlord still gives me good references, but somehow I'm doubting he does the same for them....
