Editing the movie to suit your own purposes is legal as long as you don't sell it for profit. Ripping the movie and cut scenes from the DVD is most likely illegal due to the anti-fair use Digital Millenium Copyright Act (DMCA). I doubt the MPAA would come after you just for reediting a movie for your own use, though.
