I was 5 in 1980. I was just entering high school when the 80's ended. And yeah, I loved the 80's. I freely admit that the music was lame; the thing about the 80's (much like the 50's) is that there wasn't much in the way of external conflict. There was the Cold War, but nothing much was actually HAPPENING; there were no protest songs, there was no really big issue for the rebellious youth to unite around. So you wound up with music that, like the 50's and early 60's, was alot of "I love you, girl," and "Yeah, yeah, yeah." It was updated - synth was all the rage - but it wasn't overwhelmingly interesting. But I still love it; I have a soft spot for it. It's more nostalgia than anything else. And yeah, I listen to the retro station, too. ;-)
In my eyes, it was a simpler time, but I was a kid - I didn't have to worry about bills, car insurance, etc. It was all about running around, playing games, the long, hot summer. It was great. But I think that's probably true of every decade; they're all simple for kids. That's a broad generalization, of course, but you know what I mean. The only difference that I can see (and I don't have kids, so I may be mistaken) is that kids stay kids for less long, these days.
