: "The Adventures of Captain America:Sentinel of Liberty" was a four-book series that retells and reimagines his origin and crosses Indiana Jones with Superman. This is my vote for an astounding and underrated comic book mini-series. The art was great, but the writing was what did it. If they made a Cap movie based on this, it'd be excellent. I highly recommend reading this, even if you're not a Cap fan.

: What's your vote for phenominal comic mini-series/arc/graphic novel?

I agree it would be nice if someone made a GOOD Captain America movie (you ever see that one with J.D. Salinger's kid in the lead role? Ugh! Worst comic book movie EVER!). My humble opinion is they should shoot it in a Saving Private Ryan style and even have it set ENTIRELY during WWII (none of this frozen for 50 years crap). Comic readers might suspend their disbelief that far, but there are more movie geeks than comic geeks (and the odd few who are both, like me).
