All right, I have a quirky taste in music. My theory is all genres have good, bad and average artists. But I only listen to the best. If you want to get turned on to some serious music, go to my radio station...

...and listen for free. But in terms of what you should buy? Here are some of my favs...
1. Anything by XTC. The earlier stuff is jerky punk. The later stuff is more Beach Boys. All of it is like nothing you ever heard. Most music critics describe them as "if the Beatles had more wit and were better musicans". I agree. Purchase "Apple Venus" for the mellow side. Get "Black Sea" or "Drums and Wires" for the best rock albums ever.
2. Zappa. Man, he covered everything. Pop, rock, modern orchestra, avant garde, jazz, spoken word, theatre, soul, metal, surf, 50's vocal, jam... he did it all. Over 80 albums and even though he has been dead for over a decade, he still has more than a 1000 pieces of music (that I know of) yet to be released. Best person to ever happen to music. Buy it all. But start with "Freak Out".
3. Tom Waits. His early years was all great classic piano songwriting. Unlike other aging artists, as he grew older he got stranger. Buy with "Bone Machine".
4. Elvis Costello. "My Aim is True" for punk cred. "The Juliet Letters" for classical sense. Everything inbetween and after is gold.
