Speaking as someone who has a gaggle of female friends, I can honestly say that a healthy percentage of them did originate from an attraction/possible-dating angle. I should point out, however, the attraction almost always came from their end. Once I realized that element was there and I wasn't interested, I quickly came clean and said "Hey, I'm sorry but I just can't reciprocate." Sometimes they came to that realization on their own.
Some have lasted. Others not so much. I've never really had a situation where we were automatically friends and then tried to make something happen romantically....or otherwise....it really does fuck things right up.
However, I have established a very good friendship with someone that I royally fucked over when we were in college. It feels really good too. It truly is one of those scenarios where we don't talk for months and when we do, we pick up right where we left off. I'm thinkin' it has something to to with getting older, hopefully wiser and benefitting from the wisdom that grudges just aren't worth it.
Age, chillun.....
